I have a great aunt who continued to live in a foreign country as an immigrant.
I did not spend much time with her, but every time I heard stories from my mother about her survival in a foreign country, her presence aroused my interest in the world.
As I got to know her, I learned more about her relationship to the times in which she lived, the land in which she was born, and the place in which she closed her life.
What were you thinking as you lived in that land?
What history do you have?
What do you think about now?
Through my great aunt, my interest has expanded to people living in other lands and in other parts of the world.
I go out into the land myself, look at its history, religion, and institutions, and talk to those who appear before my eyes.
In doing so, the outlines of the relationship between you and me and the people around us in the modern world gradually come into view.
Asking the question, “What is a human being?” becomes my activity as an artist.
