HONG KONG

This work will be a portrait of Hong Kong streets and young people taken in 2018 while staying in the studio for a month at the invitation of a friend in Hong Kong.

What is striking in Hong Kong is the light.

The high humidity sucked in the light and made it hazy, the neon lights at night made the people glow with activity, and the bright night streets made me walk a lot.

The young people in the picture are people I have never met before, having contacted them through social networking sites.

With their consent, they were photographed with the aim of expressing the current state of Hong Kong through portraits of young Hong Kong people.

Their exposed skin and embroidery were beautiful, their eyes contained a bit of nervousness and a desire to see themselves, and communication proceeded with care.

Conversation with them was calm and universal, as they told me about interesting spots and good restaurants in Hong Kong these days.

The following year, massive demonstrations calling for democracy erupted in Hong Kong.

Many young people took to the streets, and I watched from Japan as Hong Kong’s city and its people were wounded and exhausted. All I did was stare.
